How to Get Your Small Business Website Indexed on Google Search

Launching a website is only the first step. Unless Google crawls and indexes your pages, your site will not appear when prospective customers search for your business name, services, or town.

Google Search Console (GSC) is Google's official free tool that allows webmasters to submit pages, check crawl health, fix mobile bugs, and see exact search analytics (what search queries people type before visiting your website).

Why Sitemaps Matter: A sitemap tells Google's web crawler ("Googlebot") every URL on your site, when each page was updated, and which pages are most important. Submitting an XML sitemap cuts indexing time from weeks down to less than 24 hours.

Step-by-Step Indexing Guide

1

Log In to Google Search Console & Add Your Property

Go to search.google.com/search-console. In the top-left dropdown, click "Add Property".

You will see two choices: Domain or URL prefix.

  • Choose Domain (Recommended): Enter yourbusiness.com without "https" or "www". This tracks all subdomains, both HTTP and HTTPS, and mobile visitors under a single unified dashboard.
2

Verify Ownership via DNS Record

Google will give you a unique TXT record string (e.g. google-site-verification=abcdef...).

Log into your DNS provider (e.g., AWS Route 53, Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Namecheap) and add a new record:

  • Type: TXT
  • Name / Host: @ (or leave blank)
  • Value / Target: Paste the Google verification code

Click "Verify" in Search Console. Verification usually takes 30–60 seconds to propagate.

3

Submit Your XML Sitemap (sitemap.xml)

In the left sidebar, click Sitemaps under the "Indexing" section.

In the "Add a new sitemap" field, enter:

sitemap.xml

Click Submit. Google will show the status as "Success" and report how many URLs were discovered.

Common Pitfall: Never submit sitemap.html. Google Search Console only accepts XML, RSS, or plain text sitemaps. HTML sitemaps are designed for human visitors, not search bots.

4

Use the URL Inspection Tool for Instant Indexing

Don't want to wait days for Google's crawler to stumble upon your site? You can trigger an instant crawl request:

  1. Paste your homepage URL (e.g. https://yourbusiness.com/) into the top search bar in Search Console.
  2. Press Enter. Google will check its live index.
  3. Click the "Test Live URL" button to confirm Googlebot can render your HTML and CSS cleanly.
  4. Click "Request Indexing". This places your page into Google's priority crawl queue. Most pages are indexed within 12 to 24 hours.
5

Reading Your Search Performance & Finding Quick Wins

After a few weeks, open the Performance tab. You will see:

  • Total Clicks: How many searchers clicked through to your site.
  • Total Impressions: How many times your website appeared in Google search results.
  • Average CTR: The percentage of searchers who clicked your listing.
  • Average Position: Your average rank (position 1–10 is Page 1).

The Quick-Win Formula: Look for search queries with high impressions but positions between 8 and 20. Adding those exact phrases into your page headlines and meta descriptions can quickly bump your listing onto Page 1!
